In consideration of our new monthly loser blogpost rule and
the fact that readership remains low in Namibia and Australia, I have decided
to forego my “MRKL on Ice” month-in-review posts and revert back to a tradition
that never really found traction in my Hardly a Stat Holiday for the Patrik
Stefans (#PS) series. To keep things even less onerous, however, in my last
trip around the sun as Commissioner I will provide some sort of statistical
analysis on each of the uniquely American Statutory Holidays, that is,
Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Day, and Presidents’ Day, which (very) roughly
coincide with the quarter marks of the NHL season.
I believe it’s a most appropriate time at this first quarter
mark to take a look at early performances that appear totally unsustainable. It
doesn’t have much predictive value for me to opine in March that some players
are playing totally out of their minds and for everyone to expect regression.
At year’s end, there will be some
players that have outperformed what anyone would have reasonably expected.
Those performances will be the function of (a) certain players actually taking
their games to the next level and (b) luck. The majority of those players with
career years come April will be the same players who are already out to
unworldly starts. Nonetheless, now is the time to consider what kind of wild
departures from expectation we are seeing 20 games into the season, and prepare
to see regression on account of however much the element of luck has factored
in so far.
Past Analyses
Last season, I provided a couple of blog posts that relied
heavily on the assumption of parity when it comes to shooting percentage. For
example, an examination of on-ice shooting percentages (“OISH%”) sought to
identify players who were on the ice for more goals than should be scored on
their shots generated, using league averages for correction. The reality is
Steven Stamkos is a better at shooting hockey pucks than Chris Tanev. He always
will be. If you’re playing a lot with Stamkos, your OISH% should be higher than
if you’re playing a lot with Tanev, subbing one out for the other.
Historical Averages
I have previously considered looking at individual
historical stats like shooting percentage for these blogposts, but the task
always seemed too enormous. It’s not that we couldn’t easily look up what
Stamkos’ career S% was, but rather it was way too time consuming to compile an
entire keeper league’s worth of those stats. That was the case until the good
people at puckalytics.com have now made available cumulative advanced stats!
Accordingly, I have used the historical averages for both individual shooting
percentage and on-ice shooting percentages in this post to recalculate
“expected points” through the first quarter of the season.
Expected Goals
No rocket surgery here. Multiply a player’s total shots so
far by his 2010-2015 shooting percentage to get his expected goals to date.
Notable over-performers: league leading goal scorer Jamie Benn has scored 14 goals and is
sniping at 25.8%. Using his S% of 12.6% from the previous five seasons, Benn
should only have 7. Jenner, Duchene,
and Toffoli (11) should have 6, Turris (10) should have 5, and Zuccarello (10) should have 4.
Notable under-performers: much maligned Nazem Kadri has potted just 2 goals on 87 shots. Funny enough, his
S% for the previous five seasons is exactly the same as Benn’s. He’s taken 25
more shots than Benn this season and should have 11 goals. Based on past
shooting percentages and shots this season, that would make him the third
highest goal scorer so far. Instead, he is 251st #sportz. Vrbata (4) should have 8, Crosby and Simmonds (3) should have 7, and Voracek (1) should have 7!
Expected Assists
A bit more rocket surgery here, but same guiding principle.
First, take shots generated while a player is on the ice (on-ice shots of
“”OIS”), but back out his own to get an adjusted value (“adjOIS”). Then multiply
that by his 2010-2015 on-ice shooting percentage to get expected number of
goals on which that player would have the potential of getting an assist. The
last step is to apply his historical individual assist percentage (“IAP”),
which is a quotient of a player’s assists and the total goals his team scores
when he is on the ice. I had to massage this statistic a bit to back out the
goals that the player actually scored himself. Ultimately, I arrived at a
statistic that reflected the historical percentage of goals that the player was
on the ice for, that he did not score, but got an assist on. Let’s call that
“adjIAP”. Multiplying adjIAP, historical OISH%, and adjOIS gives expected
assists.
Notable over-performers: Martin Hanzal surely caught the attention of more GMs than just
Micah, who snagged him after he jumped out to a quick 8 apples on the season.
Hanzal’s current total of 14 assists is a function of some unsustainably high
shooting percentages of the boys he has been dishing the puck to in Duclair
(26.7%), Domi (18.2%), and even Doan and Boedker (14.5%). According to this
model, he should have 7 assists. Seguin
and Klingberg (19) should each have
12, while Hoffman (11) should have
5, Cammalleri (14) should have 8,
and Kane (19) should have 13.
Notable under-performers: no surprises here, really. With a
historical OISH% of just over 12%, Sidney
Crosby’s assist total has seen a drop off because guys like Chris Kunitz
and Patric Hornqvist are shooting below 7% and Kris Letang has but one goal on
69 attempts. Overall, based on the number of shots that players around him have
put on goal, and his historical 71% adjIAP and the aforementioned OISH%, Sid
should have 19 assists. At the time that these calculations were made, he had
just 8. Kopitar (4) should have 13,
and he played this same game last year, so look out. Giroux (9) should have 17, while Giordano (2) should have 9.
Expected top 20 scorers
I thought it would be cool to first recreate the top20
scoring list in a world where 2015-16 played out exactly as one would have
predicted in terms of percentage of pucks going in the net:

Impact on the Keeper League
Putting it all together, I provide you with an expected
standings, followed by a breakdown by roster comparing actual points to
expected points for each player. Before I leave things to the numbers to speak
for themselves and conclude this post, I should state some shortcomings of the
model, and particularly as it applies to our league:
·
I didn’t do anything to adjust goaltending
totals; they are what they are
·
I didn’t attempt to apply this accurately for
trades; the expected totals reflect current rosters as if all players had been
owned from the beginning of the season
·
I couldn’t use historical data for rookies, so I
went with league averages for shooting percentages (10.82% for forwards and
5.23% for defencemen to calculate expected goals, and 8.93% for all players to
calculate expected assists) and a very ballpark league average for adjIAP of
50%
·
Probably lots of other deficiencies you could
find
Without further ado…
