Nobody Respects You

This post examines the GM survey regarding perceptions of other GMs' abilities, which was inspired by this fan survey of NHL GMs. I am somewhat hesitant to release this data because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I figure respect in fantasy GMing is probably inversely correlated to respect in real life. So there, now everybody is offended.

Below I provide the results for each question in a graph along with a little commentary. In each graph, the y-axis is the number of votes and the colours represent ratings from terrible to excellent. GMs are organized from lowest-rated to highest-rated left to right along the x-axis. Your highest dot is what most people thought of you - so in the graph below, the Hartford Taylors and Joshfrey Krupuls were almost unanimously "fine", while opinions about the Teeyotes were more mixed.

Not a lot of GMs earned excellent ratings. Interesting that the Patrik Stefans received three excellent votes and the second highest rating overall despite never winning a Krusell or MacKenzie Cup. I guess two second place finishes are worth something but by total earnings the P-Stefs rank 7th.

I would attribute the one-ring Milan Micahleks being ranked higher than the two-ring Dicklas Lidstroms and Phillipsdelphia Flyers to recency bias. The other championship team, Los Amjawors Kings, will never be respected until they win "the right way", i.e., without McDavid.

At the other end I don't think the Schizzarks' GM has been terrible, just trending toward apathy as the Canucks have been terrible - his interest, and his team's performance, will turn around as the Canucks do. He added some good young prospects at this year's draft in Mittlestadt, Liljegren and Chytil, along with young guys producing right now like DeBrincat and Guntzel. As Benning regrettably said when he was hired by the Canucks several years ago, "this is a team we can turn around in a hurry."

The Quebec Rordiques earned one outlying "above average" vote so I guess that confirms GMRJ voted.

The Fylanders did not get a lot of love for a team that has finished below 5th precisely once in seven years. That was last year, so recency bias may be to blame again.

The Hartford Taylors deserve their "fine" rating so far - it's too soon to suggest anything else, and I particularly don't think they've done anything to warrant that one "below average" rating. GMTB inherited a 12th-place team and currently has it in 4th place. Early signs are good.

Winning the probably-no-longer-appropriately-named Ken Holland award for best draft pick three years in a row evidently earned the Milan Micahleks the top rating (and likely accounted for most of their high vision/overall score, as their trades and pickups have been atrocious).

Mixed bag for the Nickrooshkins depending on whether you remembered that GMNR nabbed the two best goalies available last year or that he took Mikkel Boedker in the second round.

The Powder Rangers have been very good over the last three drafts and deserve special recognition for Panarin 24th in 2015 and Boeser 105th in 2016. This year the coup may have been Sven Baertschi in the bonus round.

The Mackhawks had possibly the best draft in league history in 2016 (of his ten picks, four players became keepers on his team or another (Laine, Connor, Horvat, Rakell) and two were 2017 first round picks (Konecny, Trouba), but their 2017 draft didn't have the same kind of whimsy.

The Winter Claassics were ranked fifth-worst. I thought they had a strong 2016 draft, but GMs are not quick to forget that GMDC used his first pick in the inaugural draft on a 38-year-old goalie.

Some undeserved criticism toward the Rordiques, who I think have.. actually no, no, they took Sam Reinhart first overall in 2014 ahead of Draisaitl and Gaudreau (GMSW, by the way, deserves major credit for that Gaudreau pick - that was a Butcher-esque shocker gone right).

The Milan Micahleks at 4th are grossly overrated here. I don't think in seven years they've made a single useful free agent swap, and they regularly get burned on trades, particularly by the Joshfrey Krupuls and the Schizzarks (apparently two of the worst teams at trading - I respectfully disagree).

Okay who gave GMTB a "below average" rating? He's made precisely one trade, in which he acquired Ben Bishop and a 7th round pick for his 6th round pick. Bishop is currently the 10th best goalie in our format. Are you judging him on the moves he opted not to make? Maybe someone offered him a superstar for nothing and he turned it down? We'll never know.

I think GMFV gets a lot of points here for years ago when he used to beat up on GMRJ (and GMRJ suffers as a result.

GMAT takes, I'm guessing, a huge hit for the Tavares trade, which brought back memories of his Malkin trade.

The only unanimous rating: GMSW is both a master of puns and the most valuable contributor all-around. No doubt his reign as commissioner set the bar. Other past and current commissioners and deputies also rank highly.

I think the Nickrooshkins are underrated here - 2016 puns were legit.

Winter Claassics did pretty well considering GMDC has both a child and a law career, neither of which any other GMs have.

People who rated the Teeyotes poorly don't get it - GMAT's feigned lack of interest is all a bit, a character he has been playing for seven years. Every league needs one of those guys.
